Leading Edge Protection (LEP)
Leading Edge Protection (LEP) materials are specialized coatings or surface systems applied to the front (leading) edge of wind turbine blades to protect them from erosion and environmental damage. The leading edge experiences the highest impact loads due to rain, hail, airborne particles, salt spray (offshore), and UV exposure. Over time, this erosion can degrade aerodynamic performance, reduce energy output, and increase maintenance costs.
Purpose of Leading Edge Protection
-
Prevent erosion from rain and particulate impact at high tip speeds (often >80 m/s)
-
Maintain aerodynamic efficiency and blade surface smoothness
-
Extend blade service life
-
Reduce downtime and maintenance frequency
-
Protect structural composite materials beneath the surface
